In episode 2, we covered the second step which is understanding your company’s promotion process.
Now it’s time to create your promotion plan.
Hello There and welcome to the last episode of How to get a promotion without leaving your current company! In the first episode, we talked about assessing where you are, understanding how your performance is measured, and how you can get to the next level.
In the 2nd episode, we talked about how to understand your company’s promotion process, why it’s important, and how to do it. Today we’ll talk about the last step which is creating your promotion plan.
Now that you’ve assessed your current state, understood what you are doing well, what you need to improve on, how your company’s promotion process works, it’s time to put it all together and create your plan of action.
First, identify your goals. Reflect back on the feedback you received from your manager and your colleagues on how you are doing. Were there any gaps or development opportunities? How do you fill them in?
For example, if you were told you need to work on larger projects – think about what you could take on to fit those criteria. Write down your goals and the daily, weekly, or monthly steps you need to take to achieve them.
Share your plan with your manager, get their feedback, and ask for their support with seeking any growth or development opportunities. Agree how often you will check in on your progress.
For example, you can agree to touch base on your promotion progress every month. The other thing you can do is to agree on a timeline for when the promotion will happen.
Get some commitment on a timeline so that you both know what you’re working towards and you’re not left hanging.
Now that you’ve created your plan, don’t just put it away and forget about it! Put it somewhere you can see it regularly. If you’re visual like me, you can even create a vision board for it.
Print out pictures that represent your goals and stick them around your room so you can see it every day. Keeping it front and center in your mind will make sure you don’t get sidetracked.
And that’s how you get a promotion without leaving your current company. I hope you’ve enjoyed this and found it useful.
